Accessibility statement
Last updated 13 October 2026 · What changed
smylpay.com/accessibility
We want everyone to be able to use Smyl, whatever device you use and however you use it.
The short version
- We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.
- You should be able to use Smyl with a keyboard, a screen reader, zoom and larger text.
- Some things don’t work as well as they should yet. We list them below with what to do instead.
- Tell us about any problem and we aim to reply within 1 working day.
This is a summary. The full text below is what applies.
On this page (10 sections)
1. Using Smyl
This statement covers smylpay.com and shop pages, the Smyl app, and the Back office that shops use. You should be able to:
- Use every page with a keyboard alone.
- Use a screen reader, such as VoiceOver, TalkBack or NVDA.
- Zoom in, or make text larger, without losing content.
- Use the website and the Back office in light or dark mode, following your device’s setting.
- Turn off animation: Smyl follows your device’s “reduce motion” setting.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use.
2. How accessible Smyl is
smylpay.com and shop pages
Most of the website works well with a keyboard, screen readers and zoom. Tables scroll on their own on small screens, so the page doesn’t.
The Smyl app
The app supports VoiceOver and TalkBack labels, larger text and reduced motion. Buttons are designed to be at least 44 points tall. Some parts need the camera or your bank’s app, which we list below.
The Back office
The Back office works with a keyboard and screen readers. The Counter can be used by typing a customer’s code instead of scanning it.
3. Things that don’t work well yet
- Scanning a shop’s payment code needs your phone’s camera. Instead, the shop can scan your My code.
- You approve payments in your own bank’s app. Smyl can’t control how accessible that app is. You can also pay the shop by cash or card and still get a receipt.
- Distances need your location or a postcode. If you don’t want to share your location, type a postcode.
- The Smyl app is light mode only for now. You can still use your phone’s larger text and zoom settings.
- Photos that shops add may not have a written description.
- We haven’t yet had every screen tested by people who use assistive technology every day.
4. Getting help or another format
If you need anything on Smyl in another format, such as large print or plain text, email hello@smylpay.com or use our contact form. Tell us what you need and how we can reach you.
5. Reporting an accessibility problem
We’re always looking to improve. If you find a problem that isn’t listed here, or think we’re not meeting the standard, email hello@smylpay.com or use our contact form. We aim to reply within 1 working day (Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm).
6. If you’re not happy with our reply
If you’re not happy with how we respond, you can contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).
7. Technical information
Sternpay Inc. Ltd is committed to making Smyl accessible. Smyl partially meets the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 at level AA, because of the gaps listed in section 3.
8. How we tested
Our own team reviews every screen against WCAG 2.2 AA before and after it is built. That covers keyboard use, colour contrast, text size, reduced motion and screen reader labels. We last did this in October 2026. We haven’t had an external audit yet.
9. What we’re doing to improve
We fix accessibility problems as part of our normal work, and every new screen is reviewed for accessibility before it is built. We’ll update this statement when we fix a gap or find a new one.
